Lubricants are substances that are used for lubrication machines and the internal components so that the heat and friction produced can be minimized to a great extent. Lubricants are used everywhere from households to automotive. It is widely used as metal on metals that are subjected to faster wear and tear and friction. Lubricants are mainly used in internal components of the engines to limit the heat produced, and friction generated, and reduce wear and tear. So, even if you are a professional, mechanic, or just a simple user, you need to be very careful in handling and using the lubricants as they can pose a danger. Therefore, there must be clear ideas and knowledge on lubricants and protocols must be strictly followed to prevent accidents.

As said earlier lubricants are used to lubricate the metal parts of machines. The purpose of lubricant can vary and so lubricants are available in different forms such as grease, oils, spray models, etc.. the user must elect the right lubricants for the use to have better efficiency and performance. The first lubricant was animal fat and vegetable oil, and then it went through many stages to reach the latest model of lubricant, synthetic lubricants. One must identify the correct lubricant needed for the specific purpose and the user manual must be read carefully before application.

Some of the most common safety guidelines are:

1. Read the Label carefully:

Different lubricants might have different instructions for use. The users must carefully read the label and safety data sheets for more information. Reading the label and SDS can give awareness of the storage, contents, handling, and emergency procedures. Lubricants must be used only by following those instructions.

2. Use Personal safety equipment:

The users must strictly use personal protective equipment(PPE) when using lubricants. It is better to use safety gloves, glasses, boots, and other protective clothes to keep yourself safe from harmful substances. Lubricants can be sometimes so harmful and can be a threat to life. It can also cause skin irritation and respiratory problems, when working in low-ventilated rooms or when using sprays.

3. proper storage:

Lubricants must be stored in a safe place with either a warm or cool nature. It should be kept away from children and others as swallowing lubricants can be very harmful. Lubricants must be kept in tightly closed in their original containers away from direct sunlight and heat. Lubricants can get degraded if it is not properly stored.

4. carefully handle the package:

Lubricants must be carefully handled and stored. Mishandling or dropping lubricants can lead to damage, especially highly pressurized lubricants. Check for any damages if lubricant was dropped and change the containers to avoid leaks and spills.

Some of the specific application tips for:-

  • automotive or machinery

  • Lubricating engines: the engines must be turned off and let cool down before applying the lubricants. Use funnels to avoid spills or leakages of lubricants to other parts of the vehicles.

  • Greasing of components: the label or manual must be read carefully to know the frequency of lubricating. It is good to clean the parts before lubricating to avoid contamination of lubricants.

  • Household :

  • Doors and locks: lubricating the door hinges and locks can avoid corrosion and rusting of the metal parts. The excess lubricants must be wiped off to avoid staining and attracting dirt.

  • Tools and any other Equipment: lubricating the tools and machines should be done according to the manufacturer's instructions. The manuals should be followed while lubricating. Excess lubricants must be cleaned to keep the machines clean and reduce attracting dirt.

  • Environmental friendliness:

  • Disposal of lubricants: the disposal of lubricants must be according to the local authorities. Throwing away lubricants can increase waste and contaminate water and other resources.

  • Leakages/spills: the personnel must be trained on the procedures in case of spills or leakages. Spill kits must be provided to the personnel.

The users and personnel must ensure safety while using the lubricants. Lubricants can be sometimes very harmful to humans in many ways. Using different protective equipment can protect from harmful events. Lubricants must be used as per the terms and guidelines of the manufacturer which helps you to avoid dangerous events. from households to industries, safety must be prioritized.
